Carlsbad, California

Where your surgery happens.

Dr. Vande Ven performs surgery at Carlsbad Surgery Center, an AAAHC-accredited outpatient surgery center in Carlsbad.

Most patients never think to ask where their operation will actually take place. It's worth asking — of any surgeon you're considering, not just this one.

Consultations, sizing and follow-up care all happen at the Del Mar office. Surgery happens separately, in Carlsbad, at a facility built for it.

What accreditation means

Not every surgical procedure happens in an accredited facility. Some surgeons operate in office-based suites with no outside oversight at all — which is legal in California, and not something most patients think to check.

AAAHC accreditation is voluntary. A facility applies for it, is surveyed against national standards, and is re-surveyed periodically to keep it. Carlsbad Surgery Center holds Ambulatory Accreditation, which you can confirm yourself on the accreditor’s public register.

The practical version: if something goes wrong, an accredited centre has already been inspected on its plan for exactly that.

What surgery day looks like

Arriving

You'll arrive at the surgery center and the team will begin your preoperative checks. An IV is started.

In the pre-op suite

Dr. Vande Ven will mark the areas she's operating on, and confirm implant sizes and the other choices you made together at your consultation. This is the last check, and it happens with you awake and involved.

The anesthesiologist will also talk with you before anything begins.

The procedure

You'll be taken through to the operating room, and your procedure is carried out there.

Recovery

Afterwards you'll spend about an hour in the post-operative recovery area. Once you've fully recovered from the anesthetic, the person taking you home is given your home care instructions — so they hear them directly rather than relying on you to remember them.

You'll need someone with you afterwards. After general anesthesia, an adult over the age of 18 needs to stay with you for at least 24 hours. Arrange this before your surgery date — it isn't optional, and it's the most common reason a procedure has to be postponed on the day.

Where it is

Most patients travel south to Del Mar for their consultation and follow-ups, and north to Carlsbad on the day of the procedure itself.
