Mommy makeover

One plan, one recovery.

A mommy makeover is not a single operation. It is a combination chosen for what pregnancy and breastfeeding actually changed for you — done together so you recover once instead of three times. Dr. Vande Ven plans and performs these for patients across Carlsbad and North County San Diego — and many patients travel from outside the area as well.

Medically reviewed by Dr. Heather Vande Ven, D.O.

What procedures are included in a mommy makeover?

No two plans are identical. The right combination depends on your breast volume and skin quality, whether the abdominal muscles have separated, and how much loose skin remains. These are the four Dr. Vande Ven performs most often — and yours may be a different one.

01

Breast augmentation + tummy tuck

The most common pairing. Restores upper-breast fullness lost after breastfeeding while removing loose lower abdominal skin and repairing separated muscle. Suits patients whose breasts have deflated but not dropped significantly.

02

Breast lift + tummy tuck

When the breasts have sagged rather than simply lost volume, a lift reshapes what is there instead of adding an implant. Paired with abdominoplasty, this is the reconstruction-of-shape version of the operation.

03

Breast augmentation + liposuction and contouring

For patients whose abdominal skin is still elastic and whose muscles have not separated. Volume is restored to the breast and the flanks, waist and abdomen are refined with liposuction — no long abdominal scar.

04

Breast reduction + tummy tuck

For patients carrying breast size that causes neck, shoulder and back symptoms alongside abdominal skin excess. Both problems are addressed in one recovery, and the physical relief is usually immediate.

What should I know before planning a mommy makeover?

When is the right time for a mommy makeover?

Best done once you are finished having children and at a stable weight for at least six months. Pregnancy after a tummy tuck can undo the muscle repair.

How long is recovery after a mommy makeover?

Combining procedures saves you time off work overall, but the recovery is longer than any single procedure. Plan on two to three weeks away from work and six weeks before returning to training.

How much help will I need at home?

You will need someone to manage children and lifting for the first two weeks.

Can every procedure be combined safely?

Total operative time and your health history set the limit. If a combination is too much for one session, Dr. Vande Ven will recommend staging for safety reasons.

Frequently asked questions

Can I have more children after a mommy makeover?+

You can — a later pregnancy isn't dangerous because you've had surgery. But it will likely undo some of the results, especially the muscle repair and skin work through the abdomen. That's why the usual advice is to wait until you're finished having children.

Will a mommy makeover affect future breastfeeding?+

It can, if your plan includes breast surgery — it depends on the procedure and the technique, and breastfeeding can't be guaranteed for anyone, with or without surgery. If it matters to you, say so at your consultation: it changes what she'd recommend.

Can I get a tummy tuck if I've had a C-section?+

Usually, yes. A tummy tuck incision sits low — at or below where most C-section scars sit — and the old scar is often removed along with the excess skin, leaving one scar instead of two.

What scarring should I expect?+

It depends on the combination. A tummy tuck leaves a hip-to-hip scar low enough to sit under most waistbands; breast scars depend on which procedure you have. All of them fade over the first year or two, but none disappear entirely — you'll know exactly where they'd sit before you decide anything.

Can the procedures be staged over time?+

Yes. Combining procedures means one anesthesia and one recovery, which is the appeal — but staging is sometimes the safer or more practical plan, depending on what's being done and on your health.

How do you decide whether a mommy makeover is right for you?+

Start with what actually bothers you, not with the label. If it's one thing — deflation, or the abdomen — a single procedure may be the honest answer, and you'll be told so. A combined plan makes sense when pregnancy changed more than one thing and you'd rather recover once.
